Wow. What a week! On Sunday, we packed up the suburbans and headed west to Steamboat Springs and Vista Verde Ranch for some fun in the snow. We had such a great time! Some of us spent one afternoon in a riding clinic with Terry Wegener which was a great opportunity to brush up on my riding skills and to spend an afternoon with Terry. For thos

Oooo-Aaaah from the Valley!
We just opened up for our 50th year on February 18, and we’re so excited for what this year will bring. It’s been great to see guests cross our cattle guard again after two quiet months. We’ve been hauling in horses and cleaning like crazy getting your home away from home all ready for

Hi everyone!
For those of you who don't know me yet, my name is Heidi and I've been working at Lost Valley since May '08. We've been getting reports here that several of our former guests suffer from severe cases of LVWS (Lost Valley Withdrawl Syndrome). In an effort to alleviate the symptoms of this virulent disease, Bob has asked me to begin blogging regularly on the social site. Now, you can keep in touch with us here in the valley throughout the whole year and hear all the news.

To All The Members of Lost Valley's Social Network:
Karen and I want to wish each one of you a very meaningful Christmas and New Year holiday season. As I look back over 2009 and its economic challenges, I'm forever grateful to the guests who supported us and our staff who worked their chaps off for us. We have much to be grateful for.
2010 is the Fosters 50th year at Lost Valley. We are excited and humbled at the same time for the priviledge of living and working in this wonderful valley and be…

A new point to add to Lost Valley Withdrawal Syndrome:
Going to London (admittedly I was going anyway) and getting Standford’s Map Shop to print out the US Department of Interior, US Geographic Survey 1:2400 Cheesman Lake Quadrangle topographical map. It cost me £20 but is worth it. I got so excited I had to show the man in the shop a photo of where he was printing out – I don't think he was too impressed!

Dawn tells of her blues. I'm sure Lindy Colmer my good friend would not mind me posting this list she wrote - as you can see- a long time ago. It sums everything up.

Last day, last rides, last blog! Dull but not too cold in the morning. Saw the beaver in the far beaver pond and another one just beyond the first cattle guard to the South. Three of us rode up High Ridge and then got round to Jessup Drive. A slight snow flurry around lunch time but in the afternoon it was just very fresh. Saw two elk – just Josh (S) and I. I rode Chisholm. Rainy caught some sort of varmint and carried it for ages. Quite a lot of snow set in after the ride. Looking forward to la…

The Melodrama was just as good as last week with a few new jokes. Saturday morning the beaver did not put in an appearance. The other day I collected feathers from a Flicker. Probably a red-shafted flicker as the shafts were red. It is a member of the woodpecker family. Saw a large kingfisher type bird too.
The day was sunny but windy. There are 55 guests so getting the rides out was complicated. I rode May and in the afternoon went in with the Progressive beginners and had a nice ride towards J…

Monday was fairly uneventful and sunny. Tuesday was really different. This was the day the vets and vet technicians came to see to any lame horses and to rasp (float) the teeth. This involved about 9 people. Before they came the horses had their wormers too. This meant that all the horses came in, so the place…

Friday
Today was competition day - we were divided arbitrarily into groups of 3 and had to give ourselves a name – there were the Jammy Team, Southern Comfort, Judges Favourites, No Bull, Suck-ups and No Nombres! We had to take turns and drive 4 cattle from one end of the arena through two cones, round a barrel and then through a gate – opening and closing the gate before and after. There were time penalties and style marks. Then we had to do it all again but with two animals we had to cut out.…

The program was moved back to the ranch even though we ate outside and was the usual mixture of songs that brought a tear to the eye and comedy that made you cry with laughter. Becca and Will Warnock tried to get in on the act too! Sadly the day ride was cancelled due to lack of interest but it was a beautiful sunny day. After I saw the beaver again in the morning we rode to Apache and saw chipmunks. On the way back we stopped to watch Jeff and his 10 year old son Owen roping steers in the arena…

Wednesday
I completely forgot that yesterday on my morning walk I saw the beaver in the creek quite near the ranch. Also the HMS people did the obstacle course in the arena. This consists of various items: bending through cones, figures of eight round barrels, 360 degree turn in a small square and the L shaped corridor –forward and backward – a good test of spatial awareness as well of horseman ship skills!! Also the gate- which is actually a rope strung between two posts to open and close. Las…
