Our Brand of Western Hospitality

Monday

The morning was bright so I rode my bike to the beaver pond – no beaver to see but I heard a tail slap. Did see a Merganser and mallard. After breakfast all the HMS week people congregated in the meadow and had a few pointers from Laurie about what would be happening and we all introduced ourselves. We then had a ride to Table Rock to find out everyone’s abilities and for everyone to learn a bit more about their horses. After lunch nearly fell asleep on the sofa but managed to get out finding excitement on the horizon. Someone had called from Cheesman Lake to say the missing 3 heifers had been found. So of course I had to say “Yes” when I was asked if I wanted to go along. Doing “real” cowboy work is much more fun than I ever thought it would be when I first came to the valley! So Tony, Kelly, Josh, Paul and I leapt in the truck with our horses in the trailer and set off. Sadly when we got to the actual lake they knew nothing about it and we had to come back empty handed. So we just joined in the area party who were working on turns on the forehand and steering. Iron Man is not very keen on arena work and leaving the others for his turn resulted in a bit of an argument but in the end he agreed to do the right thing! We had to do figures of 8 round barrels and bending round cones. Hopefully on another day we may go to fetch the heifers if they haven’t left already.
